Since my husband and I met he’s had a ‘thing’ for throwing me off guard. From romantic escapes, candle-lit dinners to simple romantic gestures, its always spontaneous and he NEVER disappoints. Heres to all the men keeping chivalry alive, opening doors, offering a jacket and like my hubby, surprising wifey with a baby-moon to Santhiya Resort & Spa, Koh Yao Yai, in Thailand!
So whats a baby-moon?
Your in your second trimester, possibly early third, your feet look like Shrek’s and your strut is more of a waddle. Realisation kicks in that this is a pivotal moment in your life that will bring about new responsibilities, challenges and demands. A baby-moon is the chance to take a romantic or relaxing vacation before your world turns on its axis and your bump is a beautiful baby! Its even more popular to plan a post natal baby-moon, allowing parents and siblings precious bonding time to just ‘be’ in the moment with your new arrival somewhere special.
Santhiya Resort & Spa
My experience vacationing at this ‘5’ star resort was extraordinary. First stop after our arrival was a one night stay at the super swank Renaissance Resort & Spa situated amidst the natural splendour that is Mai Khao Beach. An early morning rise to tropical views kick-started our enthusiasm & off to the Ao Po Grand Marina we headed. We soared through the seas till we reached Koh Yao Yai peninsula, a gem in a quiet refuge that seemed so far removed from other islands we passed. Its traditional & intricately built teakwood villas were mesmerising and the untouched nature that enveloped around us was a visual I had only ever seen in movies.
We were treated like royalty the moment our feet hit the jetty and mid walk down the pier we were warmly welcomed by the priming of a gong & traditional bowing known as ‘way’ from the Santhiya personnel. It took us a while to catch our breath, reality hadn’t quite kicked in. With our luggage already on the way to our rooms we decided to check out our quarters for the duration of our stay.
And WOW!… I wish I was a photographer, these photos do not do any justice. Everything in our presence was so delicately and sophisticatedly designed. Talk about attention to detail! Modern commodities were disguised by woodland carvings and covers as to preserve a time-honoured and traditional dwelling.
Time to explore! A dip in the spectacular waterfall swimming pool, followed by some rest and relaxation near the ocean front and perhaps enjoy Santhiya’s signature coconut mocktail.
We had to bring a little ‘home away from home’ music with us… The locals were loving on it!
Each day, right outside our doorstep, a grand adventure awaited us. Santhiya also offered authentic ‘tuk-tuk’ wooden car service 24 hours of the day. Hubby starting his mornings at the muay thai gymnasium or fitness centre. I chose to sleep in or watch the sunrise from our panoramic sea view balcony.
Breakfast on the daily was a delicious buffet banquet, we also dined in all three, incredible restaurants available to Santhiya guests. Meals consisted of both thai and international cuisine. The taste of fruits and vegetables differed enormously from food back home, full of rich & robust aroma, with more kick to its flavour.
On one particular morning, we were surprised to find out it was Mother’s Day, my second Mother’s Day for the year, wahoo! Along with other guests we pinned handwritten messages to appreciation boards to celebrate our amazing mums.
There were so many activities to participate in that catered for the entire family. From cooking classes, daily excursions to other islands, water sports and fishing. The resorts free rental of kayaks, paddle boards and leisure equipment meant guests could be involved in as much action as they desired. Each day new experiences, dining specials and beach spa packages were posted to the information hut.
While we took advantage of spa services down at the beach, nothing came close to the pampering we received at Ayurvana Spa. Treating ourselves to divine massages and luxurious head-to-toe treatments. I have never been so spoilt, the exact prescription of relaxation a mummy-to-be needs.
Did I mention the spa was located hill top, in a tropical milieu, no sound but wildlife and echoes of the distant lapping waves?
Preparation time is essential for a baby-moon. Hubby did thorough investigation into medical facilities in case of an emergency abroad. He had also ensured my midwife gave me the green-light to fly and the relevant medical certificates needed to travel.
While flying, I did seated exercises, kept hydrated and moved around the plane as much as possible to increase blood flow. I forgot my compression socks and very much suffered the consequences. There were moments I experienced fatigue and at times swelling. In reflection, both my husband and I agreed that it would have been a better idea to travel in my second trimester. Other than that, no further complications. A resort styled baby-moon is the perfect getaway, you can relax as much as you want or participate in as many activities you can handle.
My baby-moon was a bonding experience with my husband I will never forget. Santhiya Resort & Spa is at the top of our list as a destination to renew our vows. A fabulous excuse to return! The baby-moon is well and truly over, but as the saying goes…Memories last forever!
Life with you Isaac is a continual adventure, I love you.
