Moonlight Peak – Luxury Glamping Wairarapa

The Wairarapa attracts many visitors eager to explore its vast stretches of forested, coastal and unspoiled scenery. In addition, the region is getting much-deserved recognition for its luxury and rustic glamping sites. One currently making quite the name for itself is Moonlight Peak, a luxury, off-grid, solar-powered escape. Moonlight Peak’s exact coordinates are kept a secret until you book. It’s all part of the experience! However, I can tell you it’s approximately 10 minutes from the township of Carterton and an hour and 30 minutes from good-ole Wellington.

You’ll receive a pre-arrival email with your host’s details before your stay. From there you can chat with hosts regarding arrival and departure times. There is a barn area on a lower plain of the farm where Moonlight Peak is situated, there you will park your car, meet your host, and your adventure begins. After a friendly welcome from Summer (owner and operator), we were transported up to our destination via 4WD. Conveniently this is also how we were collected on departure.

Hubs and I tried to play it cool when we arrived at the top of the hill to the architecturally designed abode. Sometimes, a property has that much x-factor you just wanna squeal in excitement. We managed to hold it together until Summer jumped back in her ride, though our bubbles were already cracked before she started the engine.

Being short on square footage did not inhibit the design of Moonlight Peaks’s kitchen. Its smart spatial solutions allow this cozy cooking space to punch above its weight. The entire cabin floods with light, especially so near the eating nook where we were treated to views of the Tararua Ranges during mealtimes. Fit with a fridge/freezer and a gas 4-hob cooktop and oven with some pantry basics are supplied. Bring drinks, meals and snacks for your stay unless you are keen on a 35 minute downhill walk and an hour back up to the cabin (a 300-metre incline over 1.5km to be exact).

I recommend stopping into our favourite little Greytown wine spot, Down To Find Wines. They stock an excellent selection of spirits, aperitifs, beer and cider sourced locally and from unique areas worldwide. It’s a bit of an ‘experience’ too. The team there are chatty and love a good storytelling. Not too far from the cabin, is The Claireville Bakery for freshly baked soft-filled rolls, buttery pastries and sweet treats to DIE for!

Beautiful bedding and linens cloak the sleeping quarters. An exceptional feature is the double skylights in the bedroom. We enjoyed stargazing until we could feel our consciousness ebbing away into a peaceful snooze.

The hut has a wood burner for heating (plenty of firewood is provided). There is also a heater in the bedroom for cooler nights. However, the cabin is on the edge of the Tararua Ranges and very exposed, so be sure to pack warm clothing for outdoor stargazing.

Your stay includes endless use of a gorgeous cedar hot tub, situated in a prime spot in front of the cabin. I would have to say that watching the early sunrise over the emerald carpeted landscape from the tub is something out of a novel, arguably one of the best views in the Wairarapa.

The hot tub is filled with fresh water before your arrival. You’ll need to spark it up and stoke it for a couple of hours while it heats through. If you want it to be fired and ready for sunrise, like us, check sunrise times and plan well. You don’t want to miss it!

Moonlight Peak is entirely off-grid with a high spec solar system providing electricity. Reception at the cabin and WIFI is available, and devices can also be charged. If you can however this is a great opportunity to digitally detox.

Strictly an adults-only spot. If you’re thinking of taking a much-needed vacation with your special person and travelling with your little love-monsters doesn’t sound relaxing, then booking an adults-only getaway may be precisely what you need. Isaac and I are HUGE on slicing out time for ‘us’, and while strengthening whānau bonds is our most significant focus, we can not succeed in doing so without building and nurturing our attachment to each other. But, of course, not every date day means a luxurious trip away, so we cherish these fleeting moments of togetherness.

You can book Moonlight Peak via Canopy Escapes don’t forget to check out Destination Wairarapa our official tourism site to find out everything that’s happening in our wonderful region at the time of your booking.
